Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about how SMASH helps yards and buyers trade catalytic converters and scrap metals with clarity and confidence.

General

SMASH stands for Scrap Metal Auction Sales Hub. It's a B2B online auction platform purpose-built for trading catalytic converters and all scrap metals. We give sellers a clear picture of their inventory and buyers a clear picture of what they're bidding on. Auction trading requires account approval and applicable business verification. Auction sales are strictly B2B.

SMASH is strictly B2B, built for two groups:
  • Recycling Yards (Sellers) Auto wreckers, scrap yards, recycling facilities, and any business that processes catalytic converters and scrap metals. SMASH gives you the tools to document, photograph, and track every item so you have a clear picture of your inventory before you sell.
  • Scrap Metal Buyers Refiners, processors, traders, and any business that purchases catalytic converters, ferrous, non-ferrous, and other scrap materials. SMASH gives you detailed item information, photos, and serial numbers so you know exactly what you're bidding on.
Auction trading requires account approval and applicable business verification. Review the business profile and transaction terms before committing.

SMASH serves Canadian and U.S. recycling businesses through one platform. This United States site presents local information with USD pricing and state sales tax guidance. Each sale specifies accepted currencies, pickup location and terms. Account approval and applicable requirements still apply to buyers from other regions.

For Recycling Yards

Most yards sell to a handful of local buyers through phone calls and handshake deals. The problem isn't just competition, it's visibility. Without a clear picture of what you have, you can't sell it for what it's worth. SMASH solves that. You document every converter with photos, serial numbers, and VINs before it goes to auction. Buyers see exactly what's in each lot, so they bid with confidence. Plus, you get:
  • A clear picture of your inventory before you sell it
  • Photo documentation and serial number tracking for every converter
  • Account approval and applicable business verification for auction trading
  • Commodity reference prices for market context, separate from yard payouts
  • Professional invoicing and record-keeping

Selling at auction is commission-based — listing inventory is free and you pay a commission on completed auction sales. The SMASH SCRAP FEED is a separate monthly membership that lets you read and respond to live feed listings; posting to the feed is free.

SMASH was purpose-built for catalytic converter trading and encompasses everything that goes along with it. The platform includes VIN tracking, serial number recording, and detailed photo documentation. It supports all scrap categories:
  • Catalytic converters (with VIN and serial number tracking)
  • Ferrous metals (steel, iron, cast iron)
  • Non-ferrous metals (copper, aluminum, brass, stainless steel)
  • Precious metals (gold, silver, platinum, palladium)
  • Auto parts and cores
  • Industrial scrap and machinery
  • And more. The platform supports custom categories

Absolutely. SMASH is designed to work with your existing business relationships, not replace them. You can invite your current buyers to the platform so they can bid on your lots too. The difference is that now they're competing with other buyers, which tends to produce better offers. You control who can see and bid on your inventory.

Getting started is straightforward:
  1. Register for a free account
  2. Set up your yard profile
  3. Start adding your inventory: items, photos, and details
  4. Invite your buyers to the platform
  5. Create auction lots and let buyers compete

For Scrap Metal Buyers

SMASH gives you access to documented inventory from recycling businesses. Catalytic converters, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, auto parts, and more, with the transparency to bid confidently. Instead of driving yard to yard, you can browse lots online with detailed photos, serial numbers, and item data. Key benefits:
  • See exactly what's in every lot before you bid
  • Detailed photos, serial numbers, and item data
  • Business profiles and applicable verification requirements to review before trading
  • Commodity reference prices for market context
  • Professional invoicing and documentation

SMASH auction trading is strictly B2B. Create an account, select your business role and review the requirements shown in your dashboard. Bidding requires account approval and applicable business verification; personal contact checks and company verification are separate.

The auction marketplace requires a signed-in account. Public pages provide general information about SMASH; signing in or browsing does not establish auction eligibility. Trading requires account approval and the applicable verification requirements.

Platform & Security

SMASH supports account security controls including:
  • SSL/TLS encryption on all connections
  • Optional two-factor authentication (2FA)
  • Applicable business identity requirements for auction trading
  • Role- and organization-based access controls
Use a unique password and enable two-factor authentication. Company verification, personal contact checks and auction eligibility are separate requirements.

SMASH displays commodity and exchange-rate references for market context. These references are separate from yard payouts and sale offers. Confirm the actual price, currency and terms with the counterparty.

SMASH generates invoices with tax breakdowns for completed sales. Applicable Canadian provincial taxes or U.S. sales taxes depend on the transaction and configured tax information. Check your organization's registrations and each invoice; contact support if details need correcting.

Fees, bids and payment

Listing auction inventory is free. Sellers pay their configured commission on completed auction sales; eligible buyer platform charges are shown before bidding and on the applicable SMASH invoice. Review your account's agreed rate and the sale terms, or ask support before committing.

Buyer bids are sealed from other buyers. Sellers and authorized SMASH staff review offers. An accepted offer remains subject to the platform's sale approval process.

Buyers pay sellers directly under the purchase invoice and sale terms. SMASH platform charges are invoiced separately. Check the recipient, currency, taxes, shipping arrangements and cleared funds before releasing material. A shipping quote request does not book transport.

The SCRAP FEED is a separate membership arrangement. Posting is free; reading/responding requires the appropriate membership. Your recorded rate and billing status appear in Feed Account & Billing. Contact info@smashscrap.ca if an agreed rate or invoice needs clarification.

What company verification means

Company verification reflects review of submitted business identity evidence against the requirements shown for the account. Personal contact verification and auction eligibility are separate checks. A badge is not a guarantee of payment, material quality, licensing in every region, insurance or a successful transaction. Review the sale details and applicable obligations with the counterparty before committing. Ask SMASH about verification.
