What SMASH Is — From a Buyer's Perspective

SMASH is a marketplace, not a counterparty. Licensed recyclers list inventory. Verified buyers compete. You and the seller transact directly under the terms agreed at the close of the auction.

SMASH provides the platform — KYC vetting, data capture, dashboards, auction mechanics, and audit trails. We do not buy material, hold funds, or take title.

Built to Fit ReMA Member Workflows

SMASH is designed to fit the way professional US buyers already source material:

  • ReMA — the Recycled Materials Association (formerly ISRI), the trade body for US processors, refiners, traders, and consumers of recycled materials.
  • ISRI / ReMA Scrap Specifications — lots are described using the spec language buyers already use to write purchase orders and stage downstream processing.
  • Compliance & anti-theft posture — verified counterparties, named worker accountability on every entry, and a defensible chain of custody on every lot.
  • Fair commercial practices — transparent auctions, verified counterparties, and pricing shown clearly on every lot (bid + buyer's premium) before you confirm.
  • Cross-border ready — USD or CAD pricing per sale, national reach across all 50 states plus Canada.

What You Can Source

  • Catalytic Converters — Photo documentation, serial numbers (where captured), VIN tagging, fill-level grading.
  • Copper & Non-Ferrous — Bare bright, #1/#2 copper, insulated wire, brass, aluminum, stainless.
  • Ferrous Metals — HMS 1&2, plate & structural, shredded steel, cast iron, auto bodies.
  • Auto Parts & Cores — Alternators, starters, compressors, radiators, alloy wheels.
  • Mixed & Specialty Scrap — Zorba, Zurik, shredder residue, lead batteries, industrial surplus.
  • E-Waste — Circuit boards, computer scrap, telecom equipment.

Documentation You See Before You Bid

  • Weights — Gross, Tare, and Net captured at the box level.
  • Photos — Workers photograph each converter through a guided crosshair overlay so you receive clean, usable images, not blurry phone shots.
  • Fill Level — Standardized fill-level grading on every converter, with the same definitions every yard uses.
  • VIN Tagging (where captured) — Auto-decoded VINs let you cross-reference VIN-to-value pricing systems for accurate appraisals.
  • Serial Numbers (where captured) — The most valuable data point for accurate converter pricing.
  • Worker Attribution — Every entry is timestamped to a specific named worker. If a lot is ever questioned, the audit trail is already there.
  • Lot-Level CSV — Export the data set on any sale you're tracking.

Trust, Compliance & Anti-Theft Posture

  • Organization KYC — Every selling business is verified before they can list. No anonymous sellers.
  • Manually Vetted Buyers — Every buyer is reviewed and approved by SMASH before placing a bid. Closed B2B platform; no consumer accounts.
  • Defensible Chain of Custody — Photos, serials, VINs, and worker attribution captured before the material leaves the seller's yard. The audit trail follows the lot.
  • State & Federal Scrap-Theft Posture — Aligns with the documentation expectations under state scrap-theft statutes and the Mercury and Air Toxics enforcement environment around catalytic converter sourcing.
  • A+ SSL/TLS & 2FA — Enterprise-grade security on every connection and every account.
  • Auto Invoicing — Every completed sale generates a compliant invoice stored in your buyer account.

How Buying Works

  1. Sign Up for a Buyer Account. Submit your business information and KYC documents. SMASH reviews and approves before you can bid.
  2. Browse the Marketplace. Filter by material, geography (yard-of-origin), weight class, or sale window.
  3. Review the Lot. Photos, weights, fill levels, serials, VINs, and the seller's terms — all visible before you bid.
  4. Bid — or Counter the Terms. Bid at the seller's stated terms, or attach counter-terms (different pickup window, alternate payment method, etc). The seller can accept, reject, or negotiate.
  5. Win & Receive an Invoice. The seller generates an invoice for the agreed amount inside SMASH.
  6. Pay & Take Delivery. Direct between you and the seller per the agreed terms (ACH, wire, check, or other). Request shipping quotes through the platform if you need them.
Buyer fees: no subscriptions and no monthly fees. Free to register, browse, and bid. A small buyer's premium applies on lots you win — shown on every lot before you confirm.

USD, CAD & Cross-Border Buying

SMASH supports per-sale currency election. Sellers can list in USD, CAD, or accept both. US buyers can bid on Canadian inventory and Canadian buyers can bid on US inventory — with the currency, terms, and logistics surfaced clearly on every lot. Cross-border export documentation remains the responsibility of buyer and seller.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can buy on SMASH?

Verified US and Canadian scrap buyers — processors, refiners, brokers, mills, smelters, and industrial consumers, including ReMA member companies. Every buying organization is KYC-verified and manually reviewed before being approved to bid. SMASH is closed to the public; no consumer accounts.

How is material graded on SMASH?

Sellers describe lots using ISRI / ReMA Scrap Specifications language familiar to US trade desks — HMS 1&2, bare bright, #1/#2 copper, Zorba, Zurik, Birch / Cliff / Honey, and so on. Every lot includes weights (gross / tare / net), photos, and where applicable serial numbers, VINs, and converter fill levels.

How does SMASH support ReMA standards and a strong compliance posture?

ReMA expects member companies to operate to high standards on safety, environmental responsibility, fair commercial practices, and compliance with anti-theft and trade-sanctions law. SMASH supports this with verified seller KYC, photo and VIN-tagged converter intake, serial number capture, worker-level attribution on every entry, and a complete timestamped chain of custody on every lot. Material specs follow the ISRI / ReMA Scrap Specifications convention buyers already use to write POs.

What protects me from theft-tainted material or scrap-theft regulatory exposure?

Every selling organization passes KYC before they can list. Workers are named accounts — every box, photo, and weight entry is timestamped to a specific person. Converters can be photographed with VIN tagging and serial capture. If a lot is ever questioned by a state AG or insurer, you have a defensible audit trail before the lot leaves the seller's yard.

How do payments and shipping work?

Payment and logistics happen directly between you and the seller, on the terms agreed at the close of the auction — ACH, wire, check, or other. SMASH does not hold funds, route payments, or arrange freight. You can request shipping quotes through the platform when needed. USD or CAD pricing is supported per sale.

Are there any fees to buy on SMASH?

No subscriptions and no monthly fees. Free to register, browse, and bid. On lots you win, a small buyer's premium applies on top of your bid — shown on every lot before you confirm.
